How To Keep Roses Fresh ?

A bouquet of fresh and colorful roses can always manage to lift spirits, and put smiles on people’s faces.

Though roses usually come with tips on caring, sometimes even those cannot prevent your flowers from wilting and drooping because of the presence of bacteria. To keep your flowers looking fresh for at least an entire week and preventing wilting, you can follow these simple steps.

Make sure bacteria do not grow on the stem by keeping the roses submerged in water while you cut them. This prevents air pockets from forming and thus keeping bacteria out. The dreaded bacteria that make your roses lose their freshness forms in the stems by blocking the tubes which the flowers use to pull up the much-needed water. This phenomenon is just like that of a plugged straw, and is the main reason why fresh roses will start to wilt even when in a vase full of water.

So how do you go about preventing this and ensuring the freshness of your beautiful roses? Start by preparing the water in the vase. Use a vase that is dry and clean, and fill it 3/4 full of warm water. Also, ensure that the water is changed every other day, and remember to add the contents of the plant food packet that came with your roses. The sugars in it will feed the flowers, while the chemicals will keep bacteria from growing in the water. You can also prepare this solution at home by mixing together 2 quarts of water, 4 tbsp of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of sugar.
