Are Poinsettias Poisonous To Cats ?


Many people grow poinsettias indoors, and if they have cats, they wonder whether poinsettias are poisonous to cats. The good news is that though poinsettias are poisonous to cats, the flowers do not kill on. On ingesting a poinsettia, the cats will become sick.

The reason for the cat becoming sick after ingesting poinsettia lies in the sap of the plant. This sap, known as latex, irritates the digestive system of the cats as well as dogs, causing them to become sick. As per the American Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the latex of poinsettia is not considered to be deadly or lethal. (See Reference 1)

If you cat eats poinsettia, it will suffer from irritation of the mouth as well as the stomach. The cat could end up vomiting. However, the symptoms of ingesting poinsettia are similarly to many other medical conditions, and hence, it could become difficult for a cat owner to identify the exact source of the problem. If your cat is vomiting, it is best to take it to a vet and get it treated properly to avert any further complication. (See Reference 1)

Poinsettias are popular holiday plants that many people love to have around the house during Christmas. If you want to use these plants to decorate your home during the holiday season, ensure that the house cat cannot reach them.
