Petunia Flower Care Tips

Petunias are very popular spring flowers that go very well with other annuals. You can buy young plants at your local garden centers all through spring.

Take home those plants which come with healthy and deep green foliage.Like all other plants, your petunias too will thrive in well-prepared soil. So, before you plant them, dig in some compost and add a complete fertilizer to the soil. Also, you must make sure that the plants are not overcrowded and get ample room under the sun. Ideally you should plant each petunia about 12 to 15 inches apart.

Originally available as small magenta and white flowers, today petunias come in a range of dazzling colors and sizes. You can take you pick from any of these colored petunias -- coral, purple, pink, crimson, yellow, orange, blue, lavender, salmon, red, white cream and better still, a combination of these shades. That is not all; they even come as starred, speckled, splashed, striped or veined, and in a number of different shapes and sizes. You will find petunias enhancing the look of any kind of garden, be it in a border, flower bed, hanging basket, patio container or window boxes.

Before planting petunias, it will do you good if you know about the different classes of flowers that are available. There are the Multifloras, which are great for massed plantings in open spaces. The Grandifloras, on the other hand, are suitable for planters, window boxes, accent points and patio containers. Both types of petunias have single flowers with trumpet-shaped blooms and double ones with more petals in the center.
