Flower Gardening :

Harvesting-Petunia-Seeds      Petunias come in a large number of varieties, and you can save the expense of buying new seeds and transplants every year if you collect and save the seeds. You will find these small seed pods under the petals once the flowers start fading. You must know the right time to collect these seeds though, since they are really tiny and may get lost when the seed pods split open. More..

Growing Petunias

Petunias are blooming flowers, which can be grown in home gardens, flowerbeds, hanging baskets, pots, barrels, window boxes or any other kind of flower planter.

These pretty flowers bloom continuously from spring to frost, and come in a large variety of sizes and colors. The most popular variety of petunias is called the Grandiflora, which comes with single or double blooms. Multiflora petunias are the more compact kind with brightly colored single or double flowers, while Milliflora petunias give miniature flowers which are just a bit larger than an inch in diameter. Milliflora petunias are usually used as edging plants or in mixed flower containers. The Groundcover variety is called so because they seem to hug the ground and are thus often seen in hanging baskets or on top of retaining walls. These spread over a large area with densely packed flowers, but grow only about six inches in height.

Petunias need plenty of bright sunlight to grow well, with a minimum requirement of at least 5 to 6 hours every day. They also need well drained garden soil, ideally enhanced by the addition of manure or compost, which has been worked into the top six or eight inches of the soil. A balanced fertilizer should be mixed into the soil prior to planting, and then add it as liquid fertilizer once in every three weeks. Remember not to over-water or over-fertilize your plant or the foliage will start turning yellow and eventually the plant will be killed. Pinching off an inch from the top of the stem before planting will encourage branching.
