Taking care of your orchids well will ensure that they continue to please you for a long time.Water your orchids thoroughly and mist the foliage too. Take care that water is not sprayed directly on the flowers or else they will start rotting. Also, ensure that the growing medium is always kept moist and never dries out totally. The ideal temperature for your orchids is 65-85º F (18-30º C). Your plant can endure temperatures ranging from 60 to 100º F (16-37º C) for brief periods, but remember that it dislikes sudden temperature changes. Cold temperatures will make the leaves go yellow and wilt away.
Avoid feeding the plant in winter, and when spring sets in, apply a balanced fertilizer. New growth will appear as new cane that will start growing from the base of the old ones. If cared for properly, the new cane is usually bigger than the mother cane.
Blooms usually last between 4 to 12 weeks. Once the blooms fade, trim the spike and maintain cooler night-time temperatures and these will help start new blooms. Re-pot when required, making sure that the new pot is larger, the medium is porous and the soil has good drainage.
With a little care, your orchids will continue to grow and bloom year after year.
