How-Do-You-Plant-An-Orchid      Though some orchids belong to the 'greenhouse only' variety, there are many which can be grown in a home environment. Costlier than your common houseplants, make sure you are aware of the growing conditions beforehand. In the wild, orchids are usually perched high on trees, and get their nutrients from rain, air and decaying vegetation in the surroundings, conditions that you will need to create for successful cultivation. Growing Orchids For Beginners

Growing orchids is quite easy. Like all other houseplants that you may be growing, give your orchids light, water, good soil, fertilizer and some attention and they will bloom for years.

It also helps if you could talk to the plants, or maybe even play some music for them.Watering your orchids correctly is of paramount importance to growing healthy plants. The roots should be moist, but not soggy. So, watering your orchid plants once or twice a week should suffice. It is important to let the soil drain well, and an easy way to ensure this is to place your plant in the sink and allow water to run through for 20 to 30 seconds. The growing medium should not be bone dry but should feel spongy and moist.

Another important factor that contributes largely to the health of your orchids is the right amount of light. Orchids, as houseplants, generally need medium light. So, you can safely place them near a window or any area that gets around 4 hours of sunlight daily. Some varieties of orchids like the Cattaleya thrive when exposed to 6 hours of sunlight every day, while Phals prefer bright, but indirect sunlight.

Normal room temperature is usually suitable for growing orchids. The dip in the night temperature is actually beneficial for the plant, since some orchids like the Cattaleya need that difference between day and night temperatures to bloom. If you are living in a low-humidity area, then use a humidity tray, or mist the plant.
