Caring Tips For Orchids Air Roots

Orchids with air roots are known as epiphytes. The orchids use these roots to anchor themselves on the bark of a tree. Usually, these orchids grow at higher elevations on the trees, so that they can get filtered sunlight and also get moisture and nutrients via their air roots without having to compete with the plants that are growing on the ground. If you have epiphytic orchids, then you will want to know more about some caring tips for orchids air roots.

In order to make sure that the orchids grow well, you would have to replicate the natural growing environment of the plant. In the wild, these orchids tend to grow in tropical regions and protect themselves from the harsh sun by growing in partial shade. Hence, select a room that faces south and take measures to protect the plant from being exposed to direct sunlight. If the room still gets a lot of sunlight, then relocate the plant to a room that is facing east. (See Reference 1)

Ensure that the humidity levels are maintained in the room, so that the air roots can take in the moisture. This can be attained by watering the orchid well and then letting it drain on a weekly basis. If the weather becomes dry and hot, then water the orchid twice a week. However, check the air roots before watering. Water only if the air roots appear to be dry. Also, maintain the humidity by keeping a tray of water filled with gravel or pebbles near the orchid. This will allow the air roots to take into the moisture from the air around it. Feed the air roots with a water soluble orchid fertilizer. You can dissolve the fertilizer in the water and feed the plant every 2 weeks in the growing season. (See Reference 1)

While the air roots grow out of the orchid, it still requires a potting medium to replicate the bark of the tree. The potting medium can be made by mixing coarsely cut up bark of a fir tree, perlite and charcoal. This medium will also allow the air to circulate around the roots and also facilitate drainage of water. (See Reference 1)
