When To Plant Gladiolus Bulbs ?

Selecting the right gladiolus bulbs does require that you do a bit of research beforehand, which will make it easy for you to choose the ones that will be best suited for your needs.

The gladiolus flower grows best if nourished with full sunlight and well-drained, sandy soil that is also supplemented adequately with inorganic matter. If you are going with the spring planted gladiolus flower, make sure that you have the patience, time and space required for everything from digging them up to storing them in the fall. If you wish to avoid the digging up bit, then there are hardy gladiolus bulbs available that can be kept in the ground all the year.

Wait till the first frost fades away, and then dig a trench which is 8 inches deep. Add compost and if you want to enrich the soil further, add Bulb Buddy as per instructions. Generally a cup per 10 feet of row will suffice. Remember to add two inches of soil before you start planting the bulbs. Next, place the bulbs firmly on soil with their pointed sides up. Make sure there is at least 6 inches between each bulb.

To create a nice group look or to add a border, plant around 10 bulbs of the same color. Cover with soil once planting is done and water well.  Remember to always keep the roots of the plants moist and cool. If you want flowers all summer, then make sure you start planting in mid-spring and keep doing so every two weeks until the middle of July.
