These pretty yellow or goldenrod flowers are said to have been first sighted around two or three hundred years ago in the Mediterranean region, specifically in the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal, Spain and even in places in the Middle East like Turkey. Now they grow naturally all over Europe, Asia and North Africa.The Daffodil Data Bank accounts for over 13,000 hybrids, and apart from the regular yellow kind, there are others which come in a range of color combinations, like yellow and orange, yellow and white, orange and white, lime-green and pink colors.
Each flower comes with three sepals and three petals that surround the corona in the center. The corona is often of a contrasting color, is shaped like a trumpet and has a ring of petals circling it.
Paper-white daffodils can be planted in outdoor gardens as well as grown indoors during Christmas.
The ancient Romans cultivated them extensively, though daffodils became a forgotten flower till 1600. Sometime around 1629, a few Englishmen took the daffodil out of the weeds and gave it a place in the garden. It is said that during the days of the western expansion and the American experience, the daffodil was very much in demand, and had earned its place as a ‘must-have’ in any garden. It is believed that Britain saw daffodils for the first time thanks to the Romans, who believed that the sap from these flowers had special healing powers.
