However, it is important to remember that all kinds of daffodil plants require a period of dormancy, and they will only bloom perfectly if the bulbs get some chill time prior to the growing season.Daffodil bulbs can grow in both alkaline and acid soils, as well as in clay or loam. Preparing the soil well is very important in order to get the best blooms possible. Daffodils are dormant during the summer months and start growing during the winter months. The plants need the cold weather to start growing.
The months of September and October are, therefore, ideally suited for planting daffodils, which gives the roots enough time to settle down in the soil before the winter chill sets in. However, if you live in a warmer climate where the soil does not freeze during the winter months, do not fret. You can buy the bulbs during fall, pack them up in paper bags and store them in your refrigerator. Then plant them in December or January and you will be in time for an early spring bloom.
If a longer blooming season is what you are hoping for, keep planting every two weeks, up to end February. Storing the bulbs will help in breaking them out of the dormant stage, by artificially providing them with the cold season they need. It is not that they will not bloom at all without the chill, but it will take longer than normal.
