These are the pointers you need to keep in mind in order to grow perfect chrysanthemums in your garden:
- Choose a variety that suits your visual taste and cultivating comfort. Chrysanthemums are divided into two broad categories -- hardy mums and florist mums. Hardy mums can survive harsh winters, while florist mums are more suitable for milder climates and growing in containers.
- Find the right spot to plant your mums. Full sunlight is ideal, but if that is not available, find a place which gets at least five to six hours of sun every day.
- Prepare the soil well. Good drainage is very important, since soggy roots may lead to rotting of the plant.
- Give room for your plants to grow by planting the chrysanthemums at least 18 inches apart. This allows good air circulation too, which reduces the chances of mildew and infections.
- Water your chrysanthemums weekly when the weather is dry. Pinch off new growth during spring for healthy growth, but avoid doing so in summer and your plants will bloom perfectly.
The above steps, if followed properly, should give you a lovely display of colorful flowers all throughout autumn. Rows of chrysanthemums in your garden, or in pots on the porch or balcony can brighten up the place for a really long time.
