Types Of Carnations

The carnation is a popular and symbolic flower, used in ceremonies, special occasions and for representing states and nations.

Said to have originated from the Mediterranean area, the flower derives its name from the word ‘corone’, which means floral garland.A florist’s delight, carnations are also synonymous with the expression of emotions. A red carnation is usually associated with expressing love or admiration, while yellow carnations are believed to represent sadness or dejection.

The following are the different types of carnations:

Carnation (Dianthus Caryophyllus) is the popular garden variety and comes with grayish-green foliage and red, pink, salmon or white flowers. These plants grow well in humid conditions.

Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus) germinates and grows during the first year and blooms in the second. Since it reseeds easily, there is a new crop of plants growing each year. The flowers are fragrant and pink, red, salmon or white in color. Sweet William grows well in all climatic conditions.

Cheddar Pinks (Dianthus grataniapolitensis) are perennials that come with fragrant pink colored flowers in summer. Since they grow in a dense mat, Cheddar Pinks are often used as a ground cover.

Maiden Pinks (Dianthus deltoides) are short-lived perennials and can also be used as a ground cover. The flowers are red or pink and bloom during summer.

Hardy Annual Dianthus (Dianthus chinensis) grows in alkaline soil and will wither away if exposed to hot and humid climatic conditions. The flowers bloom from spring to fall and are pink, red or white in color.
