How To Grow Anthuriums ?

The heart shaped anthuriums coming in vibrant hues does not only lie in its aesthetic value. It can be a part of one’s house decor in any climate and in any part of the world.

The plant flowers all year round with each plant producing about 6 to 8 flowers at an average each year. When grown as an indoor plant, anthuriums require coarse and well drained growing media with addition of one part of compost and peat moss each. The pot for plantation should be filled with this potting media up to a level of three-fourths. Thereafter, you can transfer the sapling from the nursery pot.

While planting, it must be ensured that the roots are fully spread out. The sapling requires good watering immediately after being planted in the pot. Thereafter, a watering schedule of once a week should be sufficient as the plant needs to dry slightly before being watered again. A perfect balance between the soil being neither too dry nor too wet is to be essentially maintained. The plant requires a moist yet not drenched soil for adequate growth.

The best temperature conditions for growth are 78 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit at night time. Temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit can be detrimental for the plant growth. During the spring and summer, the plant can be kept outdoors. However, they will survive the fall better indoors as the plant can not withstand frost.

When cultivated outside in the garden, the plant can be grown through methods of vegetative propagation, fertilization, tissue culture and through seeds. Vegetative propagation is carried out either by cutting off the top of a plant with ample roots or by cutting the aerial shoots growing from the rhizomes of the mother plant. These cutting when re-planted result in growth of a new plant. The hybrid varieties of the plant are generally propagated through seeds that take more than a year to flower. Certain universities and food production ministries propagate anthuriums via tissue culture with the objective of preventing growth of diseased plants. Organic fertilizers should be preferred in comparison to chemical ones. Chemical fertilizers need to be diluted in solution before application.
