Anthurium Growing Tips

A native of Central and South America, anthurium can be grown through four methods namely; vegetative propagation, seeds, tissue culture and fertilization.

The two prominent varieties grown in greenhouses include the flowering and the foliage variety. Most garden centers opt only to grow and sell flowering variety. The main requisites for the growth of this plant are adequate warmth, moisture and fertilizers. The soil form most appropriate for its growth varies from sandy loams to heavy clays. The soil should have good drainage capability with rich organic content. A well drained soil is important to prevent the stem and roots from rotting. The beds for planting should be on an elevated surface with the dimensions of 1.3 to 2 meters of width and 20 cm depth. Deeper planting than 5 cm should be strictly avoided as it could result in the decaying of the plant. The anthuriums should be staked after planting for sustenance. Immediate watering after plantation is a necessity. Thereafter, the soil should be kept moist, but not wet or drenched.

The best suited temperature conditions are above 60 degree Fahrenheit. Anything below this level could be harmful for growth of the plant. The plant flourishes in warm weather conditions but it should be kept away from direct rays of the sun. Addition of fertilizers and mulching are required for better results.

A few aspects need to be taken care of while growing anthuriums. Although the plant requires regular watering but overdoing the same could be detrimental and could lead to rotting of the root and yellowing of leaves. As in the case of water, adequate balancing is also mandatory with respect to sunlight. Sunlight is a must, but not direct rays. Also, the plant needs to be protected from diverse temperature fluctuations. The dead foliage should be removed regularly

For enhanced flowering, the plant should be provided with a resting period of 6 weeks during winters. During this phase, the plant needs a temperature of 15 degree Celsius, and the water requirement is low. The plant could require an annual repotting or it can be repotted as per necessity. Care must be taken to use good quality soil during the process. The plant can also be divided and thus propagated during repotting.
