The first step to building a landscaped flower garden is to choose a suitable spot in your yard. Visualize the color distribution and shape of the flower bed. First make rough sketches on paper and allocate the dimensions and areas. Mark how you are going to arrange the plants in the flower garden in order to achieve a good blend of colors. You need to consider the typical height required for the plants to start flowering. The other consideration involves space requirement for proper growth, sunlight, nutrients and season of flowering.
Generally, plants which grow tall should occupy the border. In addition, smaller plants which may require grooming, pruning and spraying should be easily reachable by hands. Ensure that you do not crush the other plants in the bed while trying to maintain a few varieties.
Trace the outline using house flour since it would be easily visible over the soil. In case you do not get the right shape, you can erase it easily. Use appropriate gardening tools to cut at the flour lines so that you can plant the seeds or the small cuttings. Nourish the soil with compost manures done naturally. Avoid synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides as far as possible.
It is a good idea to plant flowers which would attract beautifully colored birds, butterflies and insects. However, if you have pollen allergy, be careful about the flowers you choose and try to avoid those with high pollen content.
