In the northeast part of the US, apple fly maggots are considered to be the most destructive pests of apples. These maggots bite through the apple leaving a brown tail of decaying fruit. The apple fly maggot is small legless maggot which is white in color. The best way to get rid of these destructive maggots is through cleanliness and sanitation. Make sure that there are no wild apples, crabapples and hawthorn growing near your apple tree. Regularly pick up any fallen apples and throw them away before the larva can come out from the apple onto the soil. If an apple growing on the tree has a dimpled appearance, discard it immediately because it means the apply fly has already laid eggs under the skin of the apple. Do not use these apples in your compost heap as the larvae will come out and pupate into adults in the compost.
