Organic Pesticides For Apple Fly Maggot


In the northeast part of the US, apple fly maggots are considered to be the most destructive pests of apples. These maggots bite through the apple leaving a brown tail of decaying fruit. The apple fly maggot prefers the soft flesh of apples that ripen early as it is easier for them to chew. However, apples are not the only fruit that these maggot attack. They also destroy crops of crabapples, pears, plums, cherries and hawthorn.


The apple fly maggot is small legless maggot which is white in color. The best way to get rid of these destructive maggots is through cleanliness and sanitation. Make sure that there are no wild apples, crabapples and hawthorn growing near your apple tree. Regularly pick up any fallen apples and throw them away before the larva can come out from the apple onto the soil. If an apple growing on the tree has a dimpled appearance, discard it immediately because it means the apply fly has already laid eggs under the skin of the apple. Do not use these apples in your compost heap as the larvae will come out and pupate into adults in the compost.

There is an organic pesticide for apply fly maggot avaible from EcoSmart. This pesticide is made from rosemary oil, peppermint oil, thyme oil and clove oil and it is highly effective in repelling the maggot. In addition, it is approved by the EPA and is safe to use around children and pets.

Another organic pesticide for apple fly maggot is made from kaolin clay and marketed as Surround. All you need to do is mix the powder with water and then spray it onto your apple tree. The spray forms a protective barrier around the apple. You need to use it on a weekly basis as the apples are growing. You can get rid of the pesticide by washing off the apples thoroughly after harvesting.
