Urban Vertical Farming

Vertical farming is proposed as a large scale farming technique that can be used for large scale farming. With the use of the modern techniques of farming one can actually use less space, grow more and cater to a larger group of people. Also, concepts like vertical farming use very little resources.

They have also been nicknamed as farm scrapers because the crops are grown in sky scrapers. Vertical farming mainly uses recycled materials and also green house methods to grow crops. They are extremely environment friendly. They use systems like hydroponics and aeroponics for cultivation of crops. Also, vertical farming could bring little stress on the environment and climate change. Besides all this, vertical farming cuts down transportation costs as places of farming would be closer to places of supply. Urban areas need not depend on time and delays for delivering of produces.

Vertical farming is an urban concept because they are grown in high rise buildings. Several stories are involved in cultivation. A thirty storied building built in one square block of a place can cater to ten thousand people. However, there are additional energy costs involved in vertical farming in the form of lighting and maintaining humidity in the building. These could tally to huge amounts of energy costs on a large scale basis.

Also, in the current world economy, by the year 2050, nearly 80 percent of the world's population will end up living in urban areas. So the requirement of urban vertical farming will be even higher under these circumstances.
