Organic Vegetable Gardening Tips

If you are fond of gardening, it makes sense to grow your own organic vegetables rather than buying vegetables that are commercially grown with the help of inorganic fertilizers. If you follow organic vegetable gardening tips, you will also be able to save money on gas as you no longer would have to drive down to the grocery store.

Here are some organic vegetable gardening tips that you will find extremely useful:
Before starting to grow vegetables, figure out what vegetables you would like to grow. It is best to select veggies that you enjoy eating and also those that are resistant to diseases. Usually, seed packets will contain information on disease that various vegetables are resistant to. (See Reference 1)

After selecting the vegetables, earmark land in your garden to grow the vegetables. Once again check out the seed packets as some vegetables can be grown in a confined space, while others would require more space for growing. Also, some vegetables require less number of hours of sunlight, while others require more. This information too would be available on the seed packets. If you cannot find it, then make use of the Internet or check out seed catalogs. In case you do not have adequate space for vegetable gardening, then adopt container gardening methods to grow plants like lettuce, tomatoes, pole beans and cucumbers. You can also use space among the ornamental plants to grow herbs. (See Reference 1)

Chart out a planting schedule so that you get 2 growing seasons. In the cooler months grow vegetables like broccoli, carrots, peas, lettuce, spinach and potatoes, while in the warmer months grow corn, peppers, cucumbers, beans and tomatoes. (See Reference 1)

Now, it is time to plant the seeds. Some vegetables like beans, carrots and lettuce grow better when seeds are planted, while other should be first grown as seedlings, like in the case of peppers and tomatoes. (See Reference 1) There are still more vegetables such as squash and cucumbers that can grow well either from seeds or seedlings. (See Reference 1)

Once you have planted the seeds and seedlings, use organic methods to protect them from pests. Use beneficial insects like ladybugs and praying mantis to get rid of pests. Pull out the weeds manually instead of using weed killers. (See Reference 1) Alternatively, you can make a spray with vinegar and warm water to kill weeds in the garden. Use the kitchen scraps, dry twigs and garden cuttings to make compost in a compost pit. Make use of the compost to fertilize the soil. Use earthworms to introduce nitrogen in the soil and to aerate the soil.

With these organic vegetable gardening tips, you should have a good supply of veggies that are free of toxins and chemicals.
