What Is The Difference Between Organic And Chemical Fertilizers ?
Plants require nutrients like calcium, nitrogen and potassium for growth and reproduction that they absorb from the soil. As the plants absorb these nutrients, their levels deplete in the soil. A person has the choice between organic and chemical fertilizers. To be able to decide which kind of fertilizer is the best, the person should know what is the difference between organic and chemical fertilizers.
As the name suggests, chemical fertilizers are manufactured using chemical based ingredients. They are usually manufactured from petroleum products or rocks. On the other hand, organic fertilizers are made from manure, blood meal, fish, compost or feathers of a chicken. (See Reference 1)
When chemical fertilizers are added to the soil, the nutrients are immediately available for the plant, whereas organic fertilizers usually take some time to break down before the nutrients are available for the plants. The main nutrients in chemical fertilizers are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, whereas organic fertilizers contain many nutrients like calcium and magnesium, but the concentration of these nutrients are low. When chemical fertilizers are used, they do not replenish the nutrients in the soil. They only make the nutrients available to the plants. On the other hand, organic fertilizers help to replenish the nutrients of the soil and since the nutrients are released gradually into the soil, they do not harm the plant or damage the roots as maybe the case with chemical fertilizers when too much is used. Also, chemical fertilizers can pollution of groundwater and other water bodies, and this does not occur with organic fertilizers. (See Reference 1)
