Kelp For Lawn Fertilizer

Organic kelp is brown seaweed that is harvested from cold seawaters and processed on dried ground at a low temperature to produce a meal. It is an approved fertilizer for organic gardening that is good for plant. Organic kelp is not very hard to find and is easily available.

NPK, a short form for Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potash, is a good organic product and even at lower level, it would not mean lower effectiveness. At the same time higher NPK levels do not necessarily mean healthier plants. While nitrogen is required for plant foliage to grow strong, phosphorous helps its roots to grow and so does the flowers develop too. Potassium or potash is important for overall health of a plant. Kelp is abundant in NPK along with other nutrients and is often used as a lawn and garden fertilizer.

Although nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium are not the most important elements, they are needed for the growth of the plants. Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, magnesium, copper, cobalt, sodium, boron, molybdenum, and zinc are other elements that are equally important for the development as much as for NPK.

Ten pounds per hundred square feet are the required ratio for lawns and for flowers and gardens the ratio would be about 3 pounds per 100 square feet. But for trees it is one pound per inch of the tree’s diameter.

But the plants may not be able to absorb phosphorous and potassium without proper soil aeration, mineral nutrients, and other factors.  So loading up the soil with high levels of phosphorous and potassium may not make much difference with the health of those plants.
