Fertilizers For Blueberry Plants


If you want your blueberry plants to have good health, then you have to think about the kind of fertilizers to use for your blueberry plants. Most gardening experts recommend that blueberries should be fertilized in during the months of spring just before the leaves begin to grow on the plants. (See Reference 1) However, this is not a hard and fast rule. But using the fertilizer in spring before the growing season begins allows the nutrients in the fertilizer to get into the soil and enter the roots before the plants begin their active growth period. (See Reference 1) Usually, blueberry plants need fertilizer just once in a year.

Blueberry plants grow in high acidity soils. Hence, the fertilizers for blueberry plants should also contain high amounts of acid. The fertilizers should have ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate or sulfur coated urea. These tend to make the soil more acidic. The right fertilizers for blueberry plants should contain high amounts of nitrogen. However, refrain from using fertilizers with high amounts of calcium nitrate or chloride as they can adversely affect the plants and can also cause them to die. (See Reference 1)

Make sure that the soil is not deficient in magnesium and iron. These two elements are important for blueberry plants. If there is a deficiency of magnesium, the leaves will have a reddish-yellow color to them, specifically around the edges of the leaves. If the plants are deficient in iron, then the leaves will have a yellow color and the veins will stand out as green. (See Reference 1)

It is suggested that a person use organic fertilizers for blueberry plants. The best fertilizers are blood meal and/or fish meal as they help to provide the right amounts of nitrogen required by the plants. If the acidity of the soil has to be improved, then the person should think about using coffee grounds or sphagnum peat to make the soil acidic. The phosphorus and potassium needs of the plants can be fulfilled by using bonemeal and powdered form of seaweed. (See Reference 1)

Before a person decides to use fertilizers for blueberry plants, it is advisable to check the soil first. This will allow the person to ensure that the fertilizer contains the right amount of nutrients and also help to maintain the required pH of the soil. Making fertilizer mix for blueberry plants is a little tedious, but in the long run getting the right mix will ensure that the plants get all the required nutrients for optimum growth. (See Reference 1) Using the right fertilizer will help to improve the growth and yield of the plants.
